So, like Lucifer’s Hammer, The Acolyte is still headed straight for us.
They do a good job of trying to make it look awesome, but this show is going to be awful. The main character is an assassin who hunts down Jedi because MORALLY COMPLEX and SHADES OF GRAY, like the chart below.
The problem is, Star Wars isn’t morally complex enough to endure this kind of scrutiny.
The Sith blow up planets.
The Jedi blow up Death Stars to stop them from blowing up planets.
Light/Dark Side is vague California semi-spiritualism, and cannot bear the weight of the ethical edifice built atop it.
Unlike JRR Tolkien, George Lucas didn’t bother to think any of these issues through before creating The Force, the Jedi, and the Sith. Other people had to do it for him, in fits and starts over the course of decades, in video games, novels, and the Star Wars TTRPG.
The Acolyte will not be deep, morally complex, or even very interesting. As George Lucas was a step down from Tolkien, so is the creator of this show a step down from Lucas.
